FSI Summer Debate Camp

This summer, FSI had the wonderful opportunity to host its first ever summer debate camp. Highschool debaters Jason Zhang and Ryder Tang taught a two week long, intensive curriculum on the ins and outs of Public Forum debate. Both coaches are extremely experienced, having competed on the national circuit and attaining excellent results during their high school career. During the camp, students were taught what is debate and public forum, how to construct individual arguments, how to master refuting opponents arguments, how to establish a cohesive narrative, and how to crystallize the round for a judge. The students had a wonderful time during the camp, learning through creative and fun drills, practice rounds, etc… Students also learned about real world issues, ranging from climate change to foreign aid to nuclear war. Students had to creatively think of solutions to those issues, and had to debate each other to decide which solution is the best. These debates were also backed up by hours of intensive research where students had to find scientific data and evidence to back up their claims. Finally, students had the opportunity to present and deliver their arguments as the same in a real debate round, which helped with student’s public speaking skills and confidence. Overall, FSI’s summer debate camp was a great success and learning experience, and we are already looking forward to hosting next year’s camp!
